Here are the steps to install Java and Eclipse, prior to installing the Android SDK and ADT Plugin.
If you are running a 64-bit distribution on your development machine, you need to install the ia32-libs package using apt-get::
apt-get install ia32-libs
Next, install Java:
apt-get install sun-java6-jdk
The Ubuntu package manager does not currently offer an Eclipse 3.3 version for download, so we recommend that you download Eclipse from eclipse.org (http://www.eclipse.org/ downloads/). A Java or RCP version of Eclipse is recommended.
Follow the steps given in previous sections to install the SDK and the ADT plugin.

You're probably way past this now, but I just installed Eclipse, the Android SDK and ADT Eclipse Plugin on Ubuntu 11.04. This thread was pretty helpful, but in step 6 he mistakenly added the word 'type' in his code and I had to reboot after making the changes to .bashrc in order for them to take effect. Extra #1 was no longer applicable as fastboot was included with my Android SDK install. I also downloaded the latest Eclipse from their site directly rather than using Synaptic's outdated version, which couldn't install the ADT plugin. I installed all the java files from Synaptic without any trouble.

I abandoned ubuntu within about an hour of installing it. Unity caused some serious problems. Not sure how far you are with it, but you may want to snag the latest version of Mint.

I installed it on 10.04 LTS which has been pretty good. I'm planning to switch to Mint after Ubuntu's upcoming release. Been running it on another desktop that I don't use much, but I like it. This cinnamon stuff is looking promising too. Good call on Mint.
